One Way To Handle Difficult Customer

I read this in a book about how to manage difficult person. I found it very interesting and had tried the same tactics in my line of work. The story and script are obviously rewritten based on my memory.

One day, while working in the ticketing counter of an airline company, Asni was approached by a fierce looking man, namad Latif. He is very rude cutting the line straight to the counter and slammed the counter with his fist so hard, everyone was shocked.

Asni - How can I help you sir?
Latif - Don't give me that polite rubbish. I want to get on a plane to London now! You hear me!

* Let me stop you right here. If you were Asni, and you check and know that there is actually one available seat. What would you do? Give it to him? Here what Asni did

Asni - I'm very sorry sir, but there is no available seat left. Hm I tell you what, just give me 2 minutes while I try to find any other alternatives.
Latif - you better find me that seat or I will sie your company for making me missed my appointment

Asni - (picking up the phone, PRETENDING to talk to another person) Hello, this is Asni, I would like to check if all seats were taken or not?

Asni - (obviously talking to no one continues)Yes, I understand, you cannot do that. But I have a gentleman here who urgently need the seat. It's a matter of life and death (wink at the gentleman)

Latif at this moment.. seemed touched by the effort made by Asni, started to calm down and give her a thumbs up.

Asni - Please, if there is a seat, why not give to this gentleman. He wouldn't mind buseness class or not. He just need to be there for his daughter's operation (again wink at Latif)

Asni - I tell you what, you help me with this one. I buy you dinner later. So how? Ok Thank a lot!!! I really owe you one

Latif - (by now in debt with Asni... amazed with his service) Thank you so much dear. I will put up a good comments on you later. Thank again ya

Asni - (smiling)

/end script

If we just give Latif the ticket, he will still be cranky all the way to London. This way, both will benefit. But of course, Asni cannot bluff all her customer. Now that would be unethical hehe..

So how do you guys handle difficult person? Any tricks?

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
I used to do part time in Metrojaya as a Customer Service. I still missed the worklife there. Less responsibility and you can see a lot of people. One of our daily job is of course to wrap gift. I can do any design within minutes... heheh But the best memory there, is when we are so busy wrapping (it's christmas) and suddenly one gentleman came and bought us 1 box of Dunkin Donut, appreciating our work. We were smiling all day long

Movies To Heart

There are millions of movies (if counted from the beginning of time of course) in the world, we just cannot watch them all. Yes, we need to choose. Read the review and check whether it will benefit us or not Movies are supposed to be pure entertainment. I do not agree. If I' going to lose two hours of my life. I better get something out of it

List of movies I watched and important knowledge gained

1) Lord of The Ring

  • The most powerful and evil ring has only one power. Obsession which is desire, if not controlled properly will corrupt everything

2) Princess Diary 1

  • You can only be hurt if you allow yourself to be hurt (The queen's bodyguard advice to the princess)

3) Phenomenon

  • It is human very nature to fear what they don't understand.
  • We are blessed with so much potential. Some of those we aware and some we don't. In the end, it depends on what we do with it

4) Jumanji

  • Being a grown up means you take responsibility of what you did

/end list

No, learning something from movies you watch is not a turn off. It actually
make the movie easier to remember.

How about you guys? Any lesson you learned from movies you watched? :)

HEROES - Why No Power Is Better

Just now I watched "Heroes" the tv series in Star World. For the benefit of those not watching, "Heroes" is a new series very much like X-man where human were said to evolve to the point that they have super power.

Don't worry, even though I'm a big fan, I'm not going to detail the story for you. In fact, I'm going to attempt giving reasons as to why it is always better not to have super power.

1) Immortality
  • The character Claire just simply cannot die as long her brain is attached. She will just heal whenever sustain injury, minor or fatal.
  • My reason - Do you think if we are immortal we will value our life. Sooner or later, we will see other human's life is just as meaningless. "People die.. so what? I cannot die"
2) Ability to walk through wall
  • The character DL, is able to make any part of his body pass through objects. He can even take someone else with him
  • My reason - If he can go through object. I think during his first attempt, he will sunk straight to the earth core. There's no ladder to climb up. Died at first attempt hehe
3) Invisibility
  • There is this British guy, I forget his name. who is invisible.
  • My reason - Master Peeping Tom. No argument there
4) Hearing other people's thought
  • The ex-policeman can actually hear people's thought.
  • My reason - People usually not so nice inside. He or she may be smiling, but inside they cursed and wildly annoying if heard. The ex-policeman will only end up not having any friends and hate mankind as a whole if craziness didn't get to him first
5) Ability to manipulate nuclear energy
  • The character Ted, produce nuclear energy
  • My reason - Self explanatory...
6) Super Strength
  • The character Jessica, is super strong. She was seen tearing people apart like they were paper.
  • My reason - Will be permanently work as low level worker. There's not much work in the management level that require super strength
7) Ability to talk to machine
  • The character Micah, sons of DL and Jessica has the ability to control and manipulate machine. He once rigged the poll and also taking out money from ATM just by touching.
  • My reason - In the end, He will find it super boring to have conversation with them machine and end up still using IRC to chat with people hehe
8) Ability to absorb other's super power
  • Both the character Peter and Sylar is able to absorb. One naturally, another by killing others and studied them.
  • My reason - All the above ehehe
There's a reason for everything. Reason as to why we have limits. By having limits, we actually know what to aim for, and the happiness that come with the satisfaction once the aim achieved will keep us going. Imagine.. those who cannot die, What will be the purpose of his life? work? no need as he doesn't need food. family? he will only see them dying one by one. In time.. he will give it up entirely. knowledge? praying? nah!

However.. no harm wishing for the super power. But I think what we have right now is so much better and satisfying
  • Self healing - consume more Vitamin K
  • Walk through wall - use door
  • Invisibility - People are so self absorbed they hardly notice other people anyway
  • Hearing people thought - wait until he "ngigau" hehe
  • Manipulate nuclear energy - use tnb and pay up end of the month. we are not using that much also
  • Super strength - use machine
  • Ability to talk to machine - take up programming course
  • Absorb other super power - study hard.. be the top management .. boss people around (it's technically like you own their skill also right)
--------------- Personal Note --------------------------

Mind Reading 101

witch

Previously in the comment of "Blog Warming Session", I was asked to calculate a lengthy mathematical question using only my mind. Thanx to that, the rusted corner of mathematical solving department in my brain was working overtime hehe.

It reminds me though of a trick you can try on your children, or young "adult".

Preparation
  1. First of all, you must have that look like a psychic ready to posses those of weaker soul (to create that aura of you having real magic.. pretty much like the picture above minus the green)
  2. Hand the victim a calculator
The trick

You - Are you ready? I'm going to show you that I can actually read your mind... ok think of a number.. any number, let's make it harder.. any number between 1 and 100. Done?
Victim - Yeah right, ok done. (he's thinking of number 34)

You - Is that it? I can give the number straight away la.. make it harder lah. You multiply the number with 2. Here use this calculator
Victim - ok (34 X 2 = 68)

You - What else? ok try add the result with 5
Victim - ok (68 + 5 = 73)

You - Hm still too easy.. try multiply the total with 40.. no make it 50 lah
Victim - ok, whatever (73 X 50 = 3650)

You - oh ya we had done multiply and addition, we forget minus. you minus la that total with let say.. the number of days in a year...
Victim - number of days? 365? ok (3650 - 365 = 3285). So how long do I have to do this?

You - You had enough is it? ok lah... give me the total now. no no no, make it harder. otherwise you will think I'm just bluffing. You think of another number between 1 and 100. Add that number to the total just now.
Victim - this is the last right? ok done (he choose 57.. 3285 + 57 = 3342)

You - (looking more mysterious than ever) Give me the total number now
Victime - it's 3342

You - That is actually your lucky number. Believe me, (looking bored) and by the way your first number is 34 and your second is 57.. you can go now
Victim - WTF

/end script

I guess you must all experienced this type of trick before right? Well, feel free to test this one on your unsuspecting victim. Oh ya to know what's the number the victim thought. You just add the total with 115 (3342 + 115 = 3457). Can guess now, which one is the first number and which is the second?

What you do with this is totally up to you. But please, for the love of God.. Don't try to flirt with magic trick.

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
It's actually one of my hobby doing tricks. Not the commercialized one like in tv shows etc, it's just of very basic type. And yes, one of my childhood (age 12) memory involving wooing girls with magic trick... hahah why cant I just forget those embarassing ones? Oh ya to humiliate me from time to time :) Suffice to say.. it's humiliating

Know any tricks can share? (sincere attempt to change the topics hehe)

Blog Warming Session

First of all, let me welcome you to my blog. Credit given to the original designer enirtep. Believe it or not, it took me 7 straight hours to change the skin. I know that for you guys, it may only take minutes to do it, but for a complete beginner to the whole web programming and photoshop. believe me 7 hours went by so fast. So today, again I apologize since I'm now too tired to write a new entry. Let me just introduce you to my new house instead :)

The main objective is basically to widen my chat box since that is the major problem with the previous skin. So hopefully all my friends visitting me can say hi without the need to find their spectacle in the process :)

I also moved my menu to the right handside to make the loading of the content way much faster. Well for me, It IS relatively faster since I'm just a 5KB/s user. This is because I noticed that previous skin had force the browser to load all the script before the content.

Learning from previous mistakes, I also took the liberty of downloading Firefox to check the compatibility. So far, I think it's acceptable. Firefox sure is fast ya?

All being said, I really appreciate if fellow friends can give me feedback on the new design, any bug or compatibility issues.

It's true what people said - The more you learned, the more you don't know. (i.e. There are so much things we found out that we don't know)

Hey.. there's a lesson in this post after alll. :) So it's now an official entry to my blog then hehe.

Can You Read Gibberish?

An Experiment - Can you read this?

"I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. Yaeh and I awlyas thought slpeling was ipmorantt"

This is actually sent to me via email. I however still believe that spelling is most important in a word. But it is interesting though. A few conclusion I can draw from this experiment are -
  • I believe only english will have this effect since English words are usually very specific. If a Bahasa Malaysia word "Memahami" is changed, I doubt we will be able to read it - Mmamhaei
  • Maybe it is imprinted in our way of thinking that what matter are only the beginning and the end. That is why when we watch a movie, we expect the ending to be conclusive. If for example, the movie had a "to-be-continued" type of ending, people tends to be frustrated with it ~ Matrix 2 etc
  • Maybe we are so used to spelling error in sms that this is no different
--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
English wise, I was very active since I'm in Standard 4. I competed in a story telling competition in both Standard 4 and 5. There was one incident I will never forget. I was in standard 5. And before going to the interschool competetion, the teachers had organized a rehearsel for me to do the storytelling in front of the whole pupil of my school. It would be some sort of preparation. I had no problem with that. I was then up there on the stage, giving all my best when suddenly I heard some voices from just in front of the stage. They were actually trying to distract me by giving comments on my attire, my look and even my nostril hahaha. They actually succeeded when I forget entirely my script. And in the middle of the story, I walked away very embarassed. The teacher was ever angry with me, but I don't care, I actually did however win the interschool competition but lose when further representing the district. :)

So dear friends, do you have embarassing moments back in school years? Share it la... let's be embarassed together hehe :)

Procrastinator United

Yesterday was my day off, and I have a whole lot of plans to do, House to clean, bills to pay, Harry Potter to read. I spend almost my whole day doing 2 out of 3. I bet you know which one I ignore. Yes.. House cleaning.

I know no one is going to clean the house if not me. And I know sooner or later, I will be the one who will do it. In the end, I started cleaning my house at around 10.00pm and I'm supposed to go to bed at around 1.00 am. This is a real example of procrastination.

Basically we all know procrastination. It is when we skip one task (which is usually the most important and not fun) to do another task (which is more fun) or not doing any task at all (which is super fun hehe). And it has been illustrated in almost all self-help book on how to overcome it; the whole to-do list, prioritize etc.

I am not going to reinvent the wheel and elaborate on that. I am more interested on how we, the real people, handle it. This is what I did -
  • After every 5 pages of Harry Potter I read, I will get up and do 2 small things; wash the dishes and take out the garbage.
  • Sometimes when I really hate the task, and it is not that important. I choose to procrastinate conciously. For example, I have to prepare monthly maintenance report, which is very tedious. My mind go blank already with no mood what so ever to do it. I know for sure that if I force myself doing it, the report will be badly written and I may have to do it again. In that case, I usually decide to procrastinate without any guilt, and play that damn addictive "pikacu" game my wife introduced me. Later, I found out that I am able to do the report effectively for about 15 minutes before I'm out of mood again. At least 15 minutes of work done right?
  • Working under pressure sometimes do give me a bit motivation to overcome procrastinate. Usually I just lie to myself saying that in 2 hours my manager will be coming for tea at my house. I repeatedly convince myself that that will happen. And then you can see I work at 110% efficiency.
I still believe procrastinate is a bad attitude to have. But it will always be there. And sometimes it wins.

So do you guys have any secret way to tackle procrastination? motivate yourself to do things you dont like?

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
My worst case of procrastination is when I was studying in the university. I need to submit all my reports the next day, and I still had to do 14 weekly reports all in one night. The pressure that night was so overwhelming that I even thought that this might be how people who commit suicide feels like. Not that I have that idea. I finished all the reports in time, but the lecturer failed me. That was one lesson I will remember for the rest of my life.

New Item : Full View Link to Chatbox

I have included a new link at the chatbox, which is "Full View". It is basically a link to my chatbox so that you can view it at full size. It is a temporary solution before I widen the left menu.

I admit, it is very hard to read through the slim chatbox. And currently I am working on photoshop to widen the graphic. It will take some time, as I know nothing in term of photoshop skill except to resize the image hehe :)

I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused

Craziness Around Us

Thinking back, luckily the incident in the previous post involved drunk. It would be a different case altogether if it involved crazy people.

Today's post is dedicated to define the word "crazy". I'm not referring to the people who talks to himself, or those in the Hospital Bahagia. I am actually more interested in the crazy things we, normal people, do everyday.

The best definition of "crazy" in my opinion is "To do the same thing but expecting different results from it".

One good example to illustrate is hoping to wake up at 6 am when we sleep very late in the morning, obviously we will be late to work, waking up at 7am. Tomorrow.. we do it again, going to bed very late, and we expect to wake up at 6am? That is just crazy.

I guess, we always hope that luck will be on our side once in a while. Doing the same thing, and maybe with luck.. we get up at 6am.

The thing is, depending on luck is a very inefficient way of doing things. When you want to wake up at 6am, you must try sleeping a bit earlier. If that still doesn't work, maybe you can get a louder alarm clock. or ask someone who do wake up at 6am and wake you up.

The same goes to other things in life
  • Relationship - you irritate your girlfriend when you smoke, and you don't want to. just quit smoking.. don't expect your girlfriend by luck will change and accept it
  • Health - you gain weight and you want to lose some. you must then control your diet and exercise. There is no way you can lose weight if you doesn't change anything in your lifestyle.
  • Material - your computer always hang when you swith it on and you wish this wouldn't happen. Send the computer for repair. The problem will always be there if you didn't do anything.
Imagine those who gamble at Genting with no particular strategy to win, spending hundreds on their luck. Repeating the same methods of throwing dice, expecting to win. Don't you think that's crazy? Or maybe you can share other craziness happening everyday in front of you?

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
I have had the opportunity to go inside the Genting Casino one time I went there for a seminar. No I dont gamble. I will never bank in my hard-earned money there. I just went there to see what's it like. And from the way I see it, psychologist will make a fortune there :)

Heroes - With power to look calm but damn nervous inside

This is a true story and it happened yesterday (20/6), I've had a new experience in my line of work. I was working as always when suddenly one worker came running to me saying that there is a drunk tractor driver chasing other workers with a "parang". I immediately called the security guard and believe it or not, he said he wouldn't dare to go to a drunk running amok with a "parang". I am quite angry at the time, because who will go and calm the person if the security doesn't dare. What if somebody got hurt?

I am not that brave also, but I take a deep breath and "tawakal" to Allah. I asked three of my other workers and we went to the driver's place. . There I saw him alone, no "parang" what so ever.

"Fuuh! lega!". Immediately after he saw us, he get upset and start cursing. I asked all those with me to remain quiet and just stand by if he attacked or anything. I slowly approached him and I tried my best to maintain that innocent look of not knowing what happened. I asked him to start from the beginning. After a lot of cursing and incoherent words... he explained to me what's the problem.

I guess his thought became more organized to properly explain to me and thus he started to calm down. I was agreeing with everything he said and promised him to settle his problem myself.

FYI - he is a contractual tractor driver taking the waste of the mill out. He is not employed by the mill but by nearby estates. And he was paid by amount of load he can do everyday. The more he can load out, the more money he get. To load the waste will require mill's shovel, which was not available at the tme. That's why he's angry.

Of course in order for me to help him, I insist he must surrender the "parang". Everything's settled. When I walked back I can see him laughing, maybe because he think I will now do what ever he wants. Obviously I then called his manager and banned him from entering the mill compound ever again. Oh ya, no one's was hurt fortunately.

Lesson learnt -
  • My security need to sit down and come up with proper plan for all emergency. Luckily this is just a drunk case, where I can still reason with him. If it were a crazy person who just want to kill others, the workers will be all dead before police came.
  • I need to sit down and come up with my proper plan for all emergency. The problem with emergency is that it usually happen when you lease expected and if you panic, things will only just get worse. Hm do you guys ever plan what to do in emergency? like your bus toppled or burglar inside the house? I think I should..

"Pasir" and Officer

There was a man at Bukit Kayu Hitam (The border of Thailand and Malaysia). We will call him Nasir (from "pasir"). He was seen to cross the border to and fro everyday riding a bicycle with two sacks of sands.

One day, a custom officer, who we will call Faisal (From "officer"), noticed Nasir carrying the sack from Thailand into Malaysia. He immediately stopped Nasir and asked him what's inside the sack. Nasir said, "it's just sand, sir." Faisal did not believe him. Who would waste time carrying in sands like that. There must be rice or illegal things inside. Faisal then smashed the sacks of sands onto the road and found that Nasir was telling him the truth. There were just sands. Nasir then slowly gathered what remains from the sands and filled it back into the smashed sacks.

The next day, Faisal, the immigration officer, stopped him again, and did the same thing, expecting he might soon catch Nasir smuggling rice, or drugs into Malaysia. But there were nothing else inside the sacks but sands. Faisal started to feel sorry for the old man. And Nasir continued bringing the sacks into Malaysia everyday for 2 years straight. Of course Faisal did spot check from time to time but to no avail.

After the two years, Nasir had stopped crossing the border. And one day during breakfast Faisal met his old friend, Nasir at the coffee shop looking quite wealthy and very different from two years back. After a long chit chat, Faisal asked Nasir.. "Now tell me the truth, why do you brought in sands from Thailand to here? What do you actually do for a living?"

Nasir said : "I smuggled bicycle"

(Source - Forwarded joke rewritten from memory)

Lesson learnt
  • We often see the world expecting everything will be familiar and easily understandable. We prefer not to challenge our mind looking from another perspective. For example, we look at a thin man with red eye, immediately we label him as a drug addict. He might just be Bill Gates trying out contact lense. Who knows? :)
  • Next time, we see anything. traffic jam, beloved parents, even jokes like the above, maybe we can try looking it from another point of view.
  • "Gajah depan mata tak nampak, Kuman seberang laut nampak pulak"
--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
I don't actually recall my first time riding a bicycle. But I remember exactly how my brother first learn to ride the bicycle. Our father forced him to learn, and in doing so, he injured himself falling. (Not to say injured, but fall down la :p). So one night, he actually took a knife to tear the bicycle tyre. I'm not so sure whether he succeeded or not, but the amazing thing is... the very
next day was the day he finally able to ride the bicycle. :) So guys, how did you learn to ride bicycle?

Pay Yourself First

I don't know about you, but when I first started working, I can't seem to be able to save money. I received my paycheck, withdraw some to pay this, another some to pay that. By the time I reach the next paycheck, the balance in my account is zero.

Then I think to myself : "Of course la, just started working, obviously will spend a lot to establish myself. I'll wait for my next increment and by then I must have extra money to be saved every end of month"

2 years pass by just like that, and with all the increments, revision and bonus, I still have zero balance at the end of the month. Now something is wrong!!

Later I learnt of a concept which is "Pay Yourself First". Buying a new handphone is not considered paying yourself first ya :). Every month when I got my paycheck, I must take out some money and put it in another bank before anything else. And just forget about the money ever saved there.

I've already practised this for quite some time and guess what, my lifestyle seem to automatically adapt to my budget, rather than the other way around. Previously, I considered this an impossible thing to do and I may end up drawing the money out of the bank (Actually I really forget I got the money there eheh).

Well it's very true what they say - "Lagi besar periuk, lagi besarlah keraknya"

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
A true confession from me. I am a shopaholic. Not in the common way, I don't go to the mall buying everything I see, but almost everytime I will think of something to buy, how to spend money. laptop, ram, 320GB HD, domain name, car accesories, and many more. I don't really need them. But it give me great pleasure when I am on a shopping spree. Luckily I still have some control on this. Anyone else out there the same with me?

Time Travel To See Hang Tuah

What if suddenly we found a time machine and go back to see Hang Tuah. He then asked us how is the life in the 21st century. We may answer like this.
  • We can chat with anybody from anywhere in the world (via internet)
  • All information ever existed can be search in mere seconds (via internet)
  • We can see what happen around the world the moment it happen (television)
  • We can cook without fire (microwave)
  • We can fly (aeroplane)
  • We can travel around the world in less than 80 hours
Think about it, for us these are nothing new and very common. But to Hang Tuah, he must think that we are just bluffing him. There's no way all that is even possible.

If we travel back even further, maybe to the caveman period, they may even think that we are supernatural being or even god with all these common technology.

That is why I always believe that in time we will understand the mystery of God's creation that is now assumed to be unexplainable and spiritual. For example :
  • Other dimension - where djin and satan resides
  • Space travel at speed faster than light - israk mikraj
  • ESP - extra sensory perception
Now if only there are people researching this.. hm

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
I actually a big fan of Hang Tuah's legend. I may not support him in some decision he made like the execution of his brother, Hang Jebat. I don't even know whether he existed or not. But, in an indirect way I think he is still the main motivation for me to study silat during my study. I still remember, my colleague and I actually go to Kuala Terengganu four or five weeks before our final to participate in the training organized there :)

The Dark Side of The Day

Father's day is approaching. Malaysia sure has a lot of celebration. Mother's day, Teacher's day, Father's day, Valentine etc.

Technically the celebration is meant to educate us to be more appreciative.Very true.. and I can't imagine of better way of doing it. But don't you think we have to review that approach as now we only appreciate teacher during teacher's day, our independence on Merdeka day, our spouse on valentine. The other 364 days were spent without any effort to cherish them. Instead of making us appreciate them all the time, we waited for the day to come to appreciate them.

The method of celebration must also be reviewed as you can see throughout the nation, people are celebrating it by mean of spending money. Can't we appreciate them without or with minimum spending of money. It is somehow rooted in our way that to celebrate I must buy his/her something new. Sellers obviously will take this opportunity, cannot blame them.

A lot of things should be reviewed. Or we will end up being a robot, doing the same thing without ever understanding the reason and its meaning. Like shouting MERDEKA!!! like mad every August but we hate our Malaysia to the guts.

Again, I am not against celebrating these days. I think it is a wonderful idea with very noble intention. For me, appreciate doesn't have to be a trip to oversea, gift or cards (even though, people nowadays prefer to be appreciated that way). it's when ever I go the extra mile for them happily and they know deep down they are appreciated any days in my life.

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
You know I am celebrating and appreciating when the words "CELEBRATE" and "APPRECIATE" are repeated seven and nine times respectively in my post hehe

Why Do We Have Nightmare?

I have my own theories on this. We can all agree that mind is a very wild thing. To put it at ease will be a very difficult task. Sometimes the nightmare we had just doesn't make any sense. We are not sleeping in fear but still the nightmare comes.

I believe people had nightmare because they sleep not because they wanted to sleep but they forced themselves to sleep. "Tomorrow I need to work, I must sleep, MUST". The mind is very wild at the time so no wonder it reacted with the nightmare. Somehow people from previous generation know about this. That's why they relate having nightmare to not washing your feet. Scientifically, why do we ever need to wash our feet before we sleep?

1) to clean it up so that our bed will be clean? - possible
2) to cool it off so the comfort will help us sleep? = possible

I choose to believe that washing your feet is a cooling down session for your mind. The action itself is telling the mind (in the most persuasive way) that you wanted to sleep. Then with all the "doa" you recite, the mind will immediately prepare to go to sleep mode. And lastly we recite the "kalimah syahadah" which is supposed to be the last word we utter for the day before we sleep. This will subconciously tell the mind "Good night and sweet dream" :)

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
When I was a kid, my nightmare almost always involved two beast (usually elephants) running toward each other with me in the middle of the head on collision. Very short but at the time very scary hehe. Usually it is a sign that I will be down with fever the next day. Do you have any reoccuring nightmare.

Pisau Cukur Ockham

I watched the movie "Contact" played by Jodie Foster tonight. And one phrase caught my attention and if you don't mind, I would like to share it with you guys.

The phrase is Ockham's Razor. It says that "All things being equal, the simplest solution/explanation tends to be the best one"

Basically it suggest that the simpler the solution/explanation, the better it is. For example, you saw your current girlfriend dating another handsome guy in a mall when she actually know that you will be shopping at the mall that time.

Natural response would be -
  • "Is she cheating on me?"
  • "But she knows that I will be shopping here today, maybe that's her relative"
  • "Maybe she knows I'll be here, and she wants me to see her date to make me jealous"
  • "Still, she should know that I'm not easily jealous, so she may want to spice things up with me, introducing jealousy"
  • "Or did she trying to convey a message to take care of her better or else?"
The question will go on, until you forgot that magggi mee you are supposed to buy. The fact is all you know for sure is just that she went out with another guy. That's it. All else are just assumptions. This is the simplest explanation you can come up at the moment. And according to Ockham's Razor, this is the best explanation. It may not be the truth. But it is the best. So you may ask, why is this important? It is important because assumption is a very dangerous thing to have in a relationship. The danger is when you assume something totally out of emotion and you act on it.

The girl may be spending time with her beloved brother who just came back from oversea. Where as you may already start writing a break-up later that very moment out of anger. So in short - Never ever assume in a relationship. If you must, don't act on just mere assumption.

Actually the phrase is widely used in engineering, to provide the simplest solution with minimal assumption. I just find applying it in real life to be more interesting :)

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
Tomorrow, I will only be able to post from email, as I'm going back to KL.

It may not be that important, but I learn the "No-Assumption-Rule" from real life experience. For my wife, who may be reading this, No.. it's not us. I've made some mistake like losing a friend because of assumption. You remember Nur Syikri I told you before. Ya well, at one point, I had made assumptions that he is talking behind my back about my secrets (way back in the 90s) hehe. Because of that alone, I started not contacting him. He may or may not be giving out my secrets, but I had act on it. And it cause me a very good friend. hmm do you guys ever did the same mistake? share it here.. so we may learn from each other.

Creative Award Winner for Youtube 2006

My first attempt to post youtube video.. Hey! It works!

Well this video wins the #1 in the creative award for youtube 2006. The official link is here. I know this maybe old news to some. Just want to try out the video thingy.

What impress me besides their creativity is their effort. They must be practising this hundreds of times just to get it right. There must be a lot of accidents in the process.

I guess when you are passionate about something, things will be enjoying how hard it is. Need to remember this at work tomorrow :)

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
Embarassingly, when I was a kid, I believe I was in secondary school then. My brothers, my friends and I did try this to choreograph our own dance. hahaha thank god you're not there. We even had a group name. You know back then boys band were very much popular. Enough said, I'm blushing already hahaha

Memories - Spongebob Squarepants

Sometime when I look back at my previous entries, my God!! The topic is very random. But to tell you the truth, they are actually all connected. At least in my mind they are.

I'm thinking of blog, then I remember my friends > then friendster > "long time already not login" > time = 1am > work tomorrow > wish for a holiday > langkawi > beach and so on

Yes, dear friends. That's exactly how our mind works. Let's do an experiment. Try reading again the thought connection example. This time at any one time, just connect the two words. You can either picture it in your mind or just imagine the rationale behind the connection. I can guarantee you that you can recite the whole bunch of words front, back and even from the middle. However the trick is to exaggerate any images we conjure.

Another example maybe? Try this list - handphone, towel, toothbrush, bag, clock, camera etc

Now this is the hardest part - using our imagination. Be aggresively exaggerating. (read this very carefully.. and picture everything in your mind) Picture your handphone which is like spongebob squarepants. It very spongy (you can see yourself squeezing your spongy handphone) and absorp all water in a bucket if you drop it in. Now picture you using the handphone to dry yourself out from the shower just like a towel. So now you already connect handphone to towel.

Forget about the spongy handphone. now imagine your favorite towel. you are walking to the towel and are going to use it. Suddenly you realize that there are thousands of toothbrush sewed into your towel (all full of colors!!). There's red, blue and even your favorite color. Towel - toothbrush

You are now brushing your teeth very early in the morning. But this toothbrush is very special. With every stroke going out from your mouth, you can actually see bags of different size shot out from the toothbrush (Just like Doraemon items). Imagine if you brush your teeth with 10 stroke. you can already open up bag's store :)

Now you are ready to go to work/school. You took your bag (just like the pupils in primary school are using). However there is a big yellow smiley clock on your back instead of the bag. And people are laughing at you!! :) bag - clock

Running back to your house, you decided to go to bed instead. There is an alarm clock on your bedside table. You set the alarm to wake you up in 10 minutes. When the alarm go off... instead of the normal ringing noise, you hear the sound of camera (very loudly). And from your clock, millions of photos of you sleeping in embarassing position are being thrown all over the place (you know the camera where you can get instant picture, imagine that). Clock - camera

So can you recite back all the items now? How about backward? I am not taking any credit on this technique. Using this technique, you can actually remember things better. Never assume our mind is old and cannot function that well. We are not introducing anything new to our mind. They have been doing this every second of our entire life.

Rule of thumb
  • exaggerate
  • use colors
  • sex related imagination is easier to remember
  • the more ridiculous, the better
  • watch cartoons to be more graphic :)
  • Associate with emotion; embarassing, angry, sad
  • practise, practise and practise
--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
Personally when I first started this memory thing. I can actually remember up to 30 things in order. Using the technique, it is not that difficult. The problem however is that I took nearly 1 hour just to memorize them ehehe. I guess with practise it will get better. But who actually remember 30 items to buy at supermarket? I myself prefer using paper and pen. But it's always nice to know we can actually do such things :) So guys, any other methods to remember things?

Scam Devised By A Genie

A couple went golfing one day and being a beginner the wife shanked her shot right through the window of the biggest house adjacent to the course. So the couple walked up to the house and knocked on the door to apologize. A warm voice said, "Come on in." When they opened the door they saw the damage that was done: glass was all over the place and a broken antique bottle was lying on its side near the broken window.

A man (genie) reclining on the couch asked, "Are you the people that broke my bottle?"

Husband : "Uh...yeah, sir. We're very sorry about that,"

Genie : "Oh, no apology is necessary. Actually I want to thank you. You see, I'm a genie and I've been trapped in that bottle for a thousand years. Now that you've released me, I'm allowed to grant three wishes. I'll give you each one wish, but if you don't mind, I'll keep the last one for myself."

Husband : "Wow, that's great! hmmm I'd like a million dollars a year for the rest of my life."

Genie : "No problem, You've got it, it's the least I can do. And I'll guarantee you a long, healthy life! And now you, young lady, what do you want?"

Wife : "I'd like to own a gorgeous home complete with servants in every country in the world."

Genie : "Consider it done, and your homes will always be safe from fire, burglary and natural disasters!"

Husband & Wife : "And now, what's your wish, genie?"

Genie : "Well, since I've been trapped in that bottle and haven't been with a woman in more than a thousand years, my wish is to have sex with your wife."

The husband looked at his wife and said, "Gee, honey, you know we both now have a fortune and all those houses. What do you think?"

She mulled it over for a few moments and said, "You know, you're right. Considering our good fortune, I guess I wouldn't mind. But what about you, honey?"

"You know I love you sweetheart," said the husband. "I'd do the same for you!"

So the genie and the woman went upstairs where they spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying each other. The genie was insatiable. After about three hours of nonstop sex, the genie rolled over and looked directly into the wife's eyes. "How old are you and your husband?"

"Why, we're both 35," she responded breathlessly.

"No kidding! Thirty-five years old and both of you still believe in genies?"

Lesson learnt :
  • When something seems too good to be true, it usually is
  • This is actually the strategy used by most scams nowadays, they excite you with offer and rewards. They will make you feel like an idiot if letting this go. You then trust them a bit and maybe spend a few ringgit. What's the harm right? they then offer you with super attractive rewards, if only you spend a bit more. By the time you realise that this is all a scam, the money spent is not claimable.
  • Sometime being paranoid is ok. Hm maybe paranoid is too strong a word, be cautious :)
--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
My first scam experience is probably those chain letter persuading you to donate RM2 to the first person in the list. Then you make another list, erasing his name and change the sequence with your name at the bottom of the list. Then the letter must be distributed to 20 other people. I was Form 2 when I got the letter, and I actually donated the RM2.. Thats RM2 I'm never going to see again. :p

Venus And Mars

Last wednesday was my wife's birthday and I have to admit I am clueless about choosing a gift for woman. I just can't make up head or tails on what they (in this specific case, my wife) like or dislike. So here what I did, last week, one week earlier from her birthday, I told her I cannot make it to her birthday, and brought her shopping. Knowing her, she just window shopping with me not buying anything. But the main purpose for me to bring her is just to know what she likes and dislikes. So the other day when I was planning for her surprise party, I went back to the shopping mall, and bought the handbag which I noticed she like so much, but don't want to tell me. I am telling you, if I buy the handbag by my own preference, the handbag will so ugly she may cry on the spot.

Anybody else agree on this, that man will not be able to comprehend what woman would prefer and not prefer in term of shoes and handbag? Or do you guys know any man who did understand exactly how to buy those sacred items. :) Is man's mind and woman's were really just that different?

To mother nature with love

Today in the newspaper, people are talking about what they are doing to help mother nature. People are pledging this and that. This is a very good development since it shows that people are more concern about the nature. So today's post will be dedicated to nature. I'm not going to venture on the problem nature is facing and how to overcome it. Instead I'm going to list down what I have done in the name of nature and three pledges to do starting today.

What I have done for nature
  • I recycled newspaper. Total earning from newspaper recycling up to date is around RM40 :)
  • At work, I collected used paper to be reused when I want to draft something
  • Unless really needed, I told the shop owner or cashier not to give me plastic bag.
  • I avoid myself from buying take away food (tapau) in those polystyrene. Do you know that those polystyrene takes up to hundred years to decompose.
  • I only throw rubbish in the trash can. Even in my car, I forbid anyone trying to throw the rubbish outside. That's why my car is slowly turning into a portable trash can hehe
* Erk, I thought I am doing OK but it turns out only I only did five items for nature. But I can proudly say that I have been doing these five items continuously for the last 7-8 years. It has became sort of a habit to me. However I need to do more

Three Items I pledge to do immediately
  • Start learning to read newspaper online. This will reduce drastically newspaper to be recycled. I used to do this once, but fall asleep on the keyboard :)
  • Use my motorcycle just to go to and fro to my mill. Once there, I will be walking only. At least it's a good exercise.
  • Conciously reduce my electril bill to 80% (Where's the damn bill for god's sake?)
Do share with me your have-done and pledge for nature.

Whether we like it or not, the world is dying. We can't stop that. Our last hope is to preserve what's left of it and hopefully prolong its death. Every little things will count in the end. Imagine every cell in our body suddenly say "I'm not important, banji will still be alive even if I'm not doing my function." I'm dead.

You see, the chances of people saying "I don't need to do that, other people is doing it" is more likely than "Let's do that". If that's so, we're screwed man

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
The post submitted via handphone. I'm now at my wife's house surprising her for her birthday. I told her I can't see her this week due to the work piled up. So shh :) SURPRISE!!!!!!!!

That Time Of The Year :)

So how do you feel when today's your birthday? Happy? teenagers will definitely be happy, with all the parties and gift. However when we are older, ehem, more mature with age, the definition of birthday changed drastically.

Some may think of it as a celebration of life, honouring every experience we had gone through (first love, heart broken and career advancement etc) and expecting the best from those yet to come.

Another prefer to think that we are that much closer to our end. It is the time to reevaluate all goals still not achieved, dreams and sometime the meaning of life.

There are so many ways to go through one's birthday. You can be depressed about it, You can choose to ignore it entirely. Some may react with a total change of lifestyle. The popular term for this is "midlife crisis". Typical examples are like suddenly buy an expensive car, or started to dress strangely etc.

In my opinion, there is no right or wrong on how you celebrate your birthday. You can be happy or depressed. It's entirely up to you. The ultimate fact will still be that we are getting older with every seconds passing by (happy or depressed). So how ever it is you react, just consider what good will that reaction be for you. For example:
  • If reevaluation of life's goal will be beneficial, do that.
  • If being depressed will only make you sad, stop immediately (however emotional you are).
We can be emotional, that's just human but not to the expense we stop living the life we have now and be thankful for it.

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
Today is a special day. 6th June is my wife's birthday. Unfortunately she is now at her parent's home taking care of her elder sister, who just delivered a baby one week ago. Believe me, taking care of her other three children is not an easy job. The children, being children, are always going all out to make their "Makngah" scream every 2 minutes or so. By the time I call her over the phone, she has no voice already heheh. Be strong dear, and know that I will always be there supporting you (100km behind you that is :p ) and oh ya HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!

The Friendship of Rhino and Cow

I laughed out loud when I first saw this cartoon. The face expression for the rhino and the cow is priceless, with the rhino looked annoyed and the cow looked satisfied eheh

The moral of the cartoon is self explanatory, but what I'm trying to highlight is just the importance of choosing a friend. I believe that we have to be very selfish when it comes to choosing friends. There are millions of people around the globe, Millions! We can't be friend to all of them now, can we? So how do i choose my friends?

  • Support me when I'm down
  • Smile for me when I'm up there
You turn to your family for unconditional love. You turn to your spouse for companionship and support. Imagine having 10-20 people who cares for you sincerely (love), accompany you when you needed them the most, for example when you are crying at your mother's funeral (companionship) and offering help when you hit rock bottom (support). Now those are your true friends Please appreciate them with the same manner they appreciated you. You'll do fine.

So how do you choose your friends? Do share :)

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
I actually lost contact with one of my best friend. His name is Nur Syikri Harun. Anybody know him, do let me know. After SPM he continue his study in Mesir and that's when we started lost contact. During our schooling, just as every normal kids with raging hormons, we started flirting with girls hehe. Must be very traumatic for them, I mean the girls. In short, Syikri had a crush on one girl, and I had helped him approach the girl. Back then I was a cupid haha. The last thing I heard about Syikri is that he actually married the same girl. He sure owe me big time.

CEO & The Cleaner..

"HAHAHA I am the CEO of this company!!! I have ultimate power on my low level worker...I'm the most important person in this company, and without me... the company will go down the drain".

Have you ever met anyone so arrogant being the boss or working in high position in a company. Well I have... Not my current manager obviously. It occured to me. Comparing the CEO of a company and the general cleaners of the company, who would be more important? The answer to this is simply by having them take a month off.

If the CEO of the company take a month off from working, can the company manage to survive and operate normally. I believe it can because there are so many people willing to take control the CEO's power and do his work.

If the general cleaners of the company (any company) take a month off, what do you think will happen to the company? Rubbish left uncleared, stale fried rice still left at the waste basket, the toilet is unbelievably smelly. Can everyone do their work efficiently? Is there any people willing to do the cleaner's job? I can guarantee you that they can't even stand one week

So Any of you guys have experience the no cleaner scenario? or no CEO scenario. Do share. let's decide... who's more important?

--------------- Personal Note --------------------------
Again I appreciated all of you who frequent this humble blog. I admit, I'm not much of a designer. I guess it's genetic. When I was a child, 5 to 6 years old, my parents did send me to a drawing class. The class is actually for Form 5 students. Did I tell you the art teacher is a friend of my parents. So we were supposed to draw some vegetables. Everyone was given one. When the class is over, everyone finished their work except for me. I am so into the details that I even draw every hairline and leaves exactly like it is. Spending all that time and still not a good piece. I persuaded my parents to give me other hobby to start :) Good ol times

Last Option To Choose An Option

What? You end up getting the same point using the tool described before? hehe don't panic. It happens all the time. It actually shows that both choice is actually of the same importance and meaning to you. Either path you took will not be the wrong one. But the problem now is our mind. We can't just let it all go. That's where the final steps come in.

5) Solat Istikharah

I'm afraid this option is only for the muslim friends. I'm not going into details on how to perform the solat but on how actually the solat will help us.

  • First, we must know what we really want. We have done our homework and know that both option simply of the same importance. We know that whatever we choose, it is already the best decision made. What concern us now is how will the future be if we decide on A. The truth is, we will never know. So speak to Him in your doa. Ask Him to help you now. Preferably youspeak to Him out loud. Then only it will trigger your subconcious mind to chip in.
  • Perform the Solat with all concentration (khusyuk) you can give Him. Don't think about your problem just yet. That will not go anywhere, it will still be there when you are done.
  • Allah will not answer your question like a Forum Perdana. Sometime He will give you clarity and courage to decide. Sometime you will still be indecisive but everythings turns out OK. Just believe that if you pray for Him whole heartly, everything will be taken care of.
  • Last but not least, Tawakal. (The act of doing everything withinyour power and leave the rest to Allah). There's just something well outside our power, and it will be waste of energy to worry about it. ("Buang Karan" eheh). An example would be, our sun goes supernova. We just can't do anything, maybe go to another planet. Other than that, why worry now? :)

Or You Can Do This

You will have to read this as if you were watching a tv series.

Previously on Immortal Wisdom... "Cruel Process, Wild things and Weekend"

Like I said, usually when you reached step 3, you already have made the decision. For those who still can't make up their mind, there's always other tools you can use that may help.

4) Criteria Weight Solution
This tool is actually widely used in a feasibility study. Let me demonstrate it for you. Take my case criteria for example, "Manner", "Nice conversation" and "Nice to look at".

First I have to assign some weight or figure to the "manner", which is the most important to me. The higher the figure, the more important it is to me. In this specific case I assign as follows
Manner - 3 point
Nice Conversation - 2 point
Nice to look at - 1 point

Then scrutinize both girlfriends, which is better in term of "manner". If A is better, give her 2 points and give B 1 point. Here's how to do the calculation : Girlfriend A - Manner (2 point), Nice conversation (1 point), Nice to look at (2 point). Multiply the point given to the weight of each criteria.

For example, 2 X 3 = 6, 1 X 2 = 2, 2 X 1 = 2
The total for girlfriend A = 10 points

For girlfriend B - Manner (1 point), Nice conversation (2 point), Nice to look at (1 point).
1 X 3 = 3, 2 X 2 = 4, 1 X 1 = 1

The total for girlfriend B = 8 points.

Using this tool, the logical decision to make is choosing girlfriend A.

* Please note that I am not in anyway objectify woman. The examples are just to help you better understand the weighing tool which is an acceptable means to justify your choice scientifically. It can be applies to any others such as choosing real estate, career etc. If I offend anyone, do let me know and I will rewrite everything using other examples. :)
